Much Luck and Much Prosperity

by Margot Moreau on February 1, 2011

Welcome back.  We hope all of you who celebrate the Western New Year had an enjoyable holiday.  Here in Hong Kong we are just entering our 15 day celebration of the lunisolar New Year. This is the most important holiday of the year and the fireworks over the harbour are really spectacular. Our family has a tradition of watching from a friend´s boat.  In true Chinese style our friends start each year with a traditional blessing when the fireworks begin.  To welcome in the year of the rabbit they wished us, 大吉大利 ¨daai gat daai lei¨ which translates roughly into ¨Much luck and much prosperity¨. The Chinese culture openly worships wealth in a way that may seem crass to westerners. There is an oft repeated saying ¨money can make a ghost turn a millstone.¨  This is the opposite of the western ¨Money can´t buy happiness¨ to which my husband always responds, ¨Maybe not but you can probably get a 99 year lease.¨ It is a cultural difference worth noting especially since we are in the investment business.

This month analyst Tim Reynolds brings us his top pick from Malaysia where he has found an exciting way to capitalize on the growing strength of the Asian consumer.

November 2, 2010

This month, we bring you the first issue of The Asia Pacific Dispatch. Asia Pacific Set to Surge

September 23, 2010

This morning I awoke to the news that Citigroup has opened its Malaysian brokerage operations.  This comes about a month after beginning operations in Indonesia.  Since hitting its low this year in May, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index has risen 17%, and is now above its levels pre-global crisis, circa 2008. The Global Speculations [...]

Continuing on with our recap of Harris Kupperman’s trip to Mongolia, we bring you installment 3.  This one is a bit shorter, with some great pictures.  Indeed, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.  Enjoy While traveling through the Mongolian countryside, our driver plowed off-road towards a nomad camp. I realize that this is [...]

Mongolia Through a Capitalists Eyes

September 15, 2010

I wrote about Mongolia in a previous post.   It’s a place that I am fascinated by, but have never been.   I was chatting with a friend in Beijing a few weeks ago and he mentioned he was taking a trip there to get the lay of the land, so to speak, and look [...]

Asia Pacific – Are You Paying Attention?

September 14, 2010

Today we have another dispatch from our roving Asia Pacific correspondent, Chris Tell.  Chris is a big fan of the region, and for good reason.  Growth is nothing short of spectacular, with no signs of slowing any time soon.  The recent figures out of China, for example, we’re incredible.  However, we’re not naive.  Despite the [...]
