Tim Reynolds, one of our analysts, is stepping in for Margot this month. There has been some breaking news that has warranted a change in our publication this month. The February issue that we were about to publish will be pushed to March as recent events have given us a new and timely opportunity to write about. If you are not currently an APD subscriber, there is still time to get in on this new opportunity that we just discovered.

Welcome back. We hope all of you who celebrate the Western New Year had an enjoyable holiday. Here in Hong Kong we are just entering our 15 day celebration of the lunisolar New Year. This is the most important holiday of the year and the fireworks over the harbour are really spectacular. Our family has a tradition of watching from a friend´s boat. In true Chinese style our friends start each year with a traditional blessing when the fireworks begin. To welcome in the year of the rabbit they wished us, 大吉大利 ¨daai gat daai lei¨ which translates roughly into ¨Much luck and much prosperity¨. The Chinese culture openly worships wealth in a way that may seem crass to westerners. There is an oft repeated saying ¨money can make a ghost turn a millstone.¨ This is the opposite of the western ¨Money can´t buy happiness¨ to which my husband always responds, ¨Maybe not but you can probably get a 99 year lease.¨ It is a cultural difference worth noting especially since we are in the investment business.
This month analyst Tim Reynolds brings us his top pick from Malaysia where he has found an exciting way to capitalize on the growing strength of the Asian consumer.
